SEO enters the OED

The Oxford English Dictionary has announced its June 2013 update to its words list, which includes several web-related terms including the full sense of SEO, and its acronym.

Listed as ‘search engine optimization’ – rather than the commonly seen spelling ‘search engine optimisation’ – SEO is included among the list of new sub-entries, rather than brand new words.

If it seems like the OED are a little late to the party in deciding to include SEO among their definitions, then it’s worth remembering their rule that words should be in common usage for a decade before making it into the dictionary.

Google itself celebrates its 15th birthday on September 4th 2013, indicating the impact the search engine had – even in its early years – on how webmasters made sure their sites reached the top of the SERPs.

Interestingly in the latest update, the OED have actually broken the decade rule, to include the term ‘tweet’ as both a noun and a verb for the name of a message, or the action of posting a message, on the social network Twitter.

In a good-humoured announcement, OED chief editor John Simpson wrote: “This breaks at least one OED rule, namely that a new word needs to be current for ten years before consideration for inclusion.

“But it seems to be catching on.”
